Which day trip from Tallinn is best?

The single best day trip from Tallinn is Lahemaa National Park, Estonia's oldest and most beautiful national park, about an hour from the city centre. It packs in manor houses, a coastal bog trail, picturesque fishing villages, and cold-water rivers — and it is easily reachable either by guided tour or with a rental car. From late spring to early autumn, tours depart daily from Tallinn's Old Town.

Helsinki is the most popular international day trip. With up to six ferry departures daily and a crossing time of just two hours, you can catch a 7am boat, spend a full day in the Finnish capital, and be back in Tallinn for dinner. The ferry comparator above will help you choose the right operator.

Day trips you can do without a car

You do not need a car or driving licence to have an excellent day out from Tallinn. Guided tours run to Lahemaa, Jägala Waterfall and Paldiski/Rummu several times a week, often collecting from hotels in the Old Town. Ferry services connect Tallinn to Helsinki year-round, and to Naissaar and Prangli islands in summer. Buses run regularly to Pärnu, Tartu and Narva — though for Narva especially, a guided tour is worthwhile for context.

Tips for planning day trips from Tallinn

  • Book guided tours 48–72 hours in advance in peak season (June–August) — they fill quickly.
  • For Naissaar and Prangli, check ferry schedules early in the season as they are weather-dependent.
  • The Helsinki ferry is also a GetYourGuide experience — useful if you want lounge access or a guided add-on bundled in.
  • Lahemaa and Jägala can be combined in a single day by car; most tour operators offer this as a combined route.
  • For Saaremaa and Riga, consider spending at least one night to make the journey worthwhile.
