Which Helsinki–Tallinn ferry operator is best?
The answer depends on what matters most to you. For the most flexibility — including early morning and late evening departures — Tallink is the clear winner with up to six crossings daily. Their Megastar and MyStar are the newest and fastest ships on the route, completing the crossing in exactly two hours. On board you will find excellent duty-free shopping, a spa, multiple restaurants and bars.
Viking Line's XPRS is competitive on price and is also a quick crossing. Their Gabriella operates on the overnight route, which is a completely different experience and worth considering if you want a mini-cruise feel. Viking typically has the lowest headline fares, especially if you book early.
Eckerö Line's Finlandia is the go-to option if you are travelling with a car, as it has competitive car rates and a loyal following among Finnish families making the trip to Tallinn for shopping weekends. The crossing at 2h 15min is slightly longer than Tallink, but the on-board experience is comfortable.
How to get the best price
All three operators run regular promotions, especially in the shoulder season (March–May and September–October). Booking two to three weeks in advance generally gives the best combination of price and choice of departure time. Travelling mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) is consistently cheaper than Friday or Sunday. If you need a specific time — say, catching an early morning arrival in Helsinki for a day trip — book early; Tallink's 7am departures fill quickly in summer.
What to know before you go
- All ferries depart from Tallinn's D-Terminal (Linnahall and Ülemiste) or A-Terminal area — check your specific departure terminal when booking.
- Helsinki arrivals dock at the South Harbour, a short tram ride from the city centre.
- Duty-free shopping is a major draw on all three operators — spirits, perfumes and Finnish chocolate are popular purchases.
- Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before departure; boarding closes 15–20 minutes prior to sailing.
- Pets are allowed on all operators with advance booking and appropriate documentation.
