Why Tallinn Airport is unusually convenient

Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (TLL) is one of the most well-located airports in Europe relative to a city centre. At just 4 km from the Old Town, it sits closer than the airports of Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Madrid, or London to their respective city cores. On a light-traffic day, you can be in your hotel room within 30 minutes of landing.

The arrivals hall is small and functional — baggage collection is fast, there is no complicated terminal maze, and the tram stop, Bolt pickup area, and official taxi rank are all immediately outside the arrivals exit.

Option 1: Tram line 4 (cheapest, recommended)

Tram 4 stops directly in front of the arrivals hall. You will see the tram tracks as you exit the building. Board the tram, tap your contactless bank card on the yellow validator inside (no paper ticket needed), and stay on until the Viru stop for the Old Town or adjust based on your hotel location.

The tram runs through Kesklinn (city centre) before reaching the Old Town area. The journey is comfortable and there is no need to pre-book or queue for taxis.

Limitation: If you have large or multiple pieces of luggage, the tram can be awkward during peak commute hours (7–9 am, 4–6 pm). For heavy bags, Bolt is more practical.

Option 2: Bolt (fast, affordable)

Bolt is Estonia’s own ride-hailing app and the service of choice for locals. Download it before you travel (using your usual mobile number for registration) and have a payment method added. Set your destination before walking outside — this avoids any confusion with unasked-for drivers at the kerb.

The Bolt pickup area at Tallinn Airport is clearly signposted outside arrivals. Your driver’s car registration and name appear in the app; match them before getting in.

Bolt is particularly good for:

• Arrivals late at night when trams have stopped
• Travelling with large luggage
• Groups (a €7 Bolt between 2–4 people costs less per person than individual tram tickets)

Option 3: Official metered taxi

Cost: €12–18 to the Old Town Journey time: Same as Bolt

Official taxis from Tallinn Airport are metered and legitimate. They are significantly more expensive than Bolt for the same journey — roughly double. If you prefer not to use an app and want a metered taxi, these are available at the designated taxi rank outside arrivals.

Look for the official taxi rank signs and use cabs from that queue, not from any driver who approaches you inside the terminal.

What to avoid: unmetered / unregistered taxis

Do not get into a vehicle with a driver who approaches you in arrivals offering a taxi. These are not official taxis and are not metered. Reports of €20–30 charges for the 4 km airport-to-Old Town journey are common. Estonia’s official taxis and Bolt are both reliable and much cheaper.

This is not a major problem at Tallinn Airport compared to some European airports, but it exists and catches occasional first-time visitors.

Option 4: Private airport transfer

Several companies offer private airport transfers — car and driver pre-booked in advance, driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. This is the most expensive option but convenient for those arriving with multiple bags, in a group, or who want the certainty of someone waiting.

Option 5: Public bus (rarely worth it)

Bus routes 2 and 49 also serve the airport and connect to the city centre, but tram 4 is faster, simpler, and more direct. Buses are useful mainly for destinations not on the tram 4 corridor.

Getting from the airport with early/late arrivals

Late-night arrivals: Tram 4 stops at approximately 23:00. For arrivals after that, Bolt is available 24 hours and is the appropriate option. Avoid the taxi touts inside and use the app.

Early morning arrivals: Tram 4 starts around 05:30. For arrivals before that, again Bolt is the answer.

Getting to the airport for departure

The same options in reverse. Bolt from the Old Town to the airport costs €5–8 and takes 10–15 minutes. Tram 4 from the Viru Centre stop (Old Town side) goes directly to the airport.

Allow extra time during peak traffic hours (7–9 am). For very early morning flights (before 06:00), book a Bolt in advance the night before or use the Bolt scheduled ride feature.

From the airport to Kalamaja or Kadriorg

If your accommodation is not in the Old Town:

• Kalamaja: Tram 4 doesn’t go directly; Bolt is easiest (€5–6).
• Kadriorg: Bolt is easiest (€7–9), or tram 4 to the centre then tram 1/3 to Kadriorg.
• Kesklinn (city centre): Tram 4 passes through Kesklinn on its way to the Old Town — get off at the appropriate stop.

Tram line 4: the detailed guide

Tram 4 is the most useful single transit connection in Tallinn for tourists, linking the airport to the Old Town in about 15 minutes. Here is everything you need:

Route: Tallinn Airport → Ülemiste → Bussijaam (central bus station) → Hobujaama → Teatri Väljak → Viru Centre (Old Town area) → continues west.

The stop you want: Viru for the Old Town. Viru Centre is adjacent to the Viru Gate, the main eastern entrance to the walled city. From Viru tram stop to most Old Town hotels is 5–15 minutes on foot.

Hours: Approximately 05:30 to 23:00, with frequency of one tram every 8–12 minutes during the day, less frequent in evenings. The full schedule is on the Tallinn Transport (TLT) website or app.

How to pay: Tap your contactless bank card (or Apple Pay / Google Pay) on the yellow validator inside the tram as you board. The charge is €1.50 per journey. No need for a separate transit card or app — just tap your bank card.

What tram 4 looks like: The trams are blue and yellow. Newer models have LED route indicators at the front. The airport stop is at ground level immediately in front of the arrivals exit — you cannot miss it.

Bolt: the detailed guide

Bolt is the right choice when tram 4 is not practical (late night, heavy luggage, groups, rain, tight schedule). Here is how to use it:

Download and register: Install the Bolt app (iOS or Android) before you travel. Register with your mobile number and add a payment card. This takes about 3 minutes and is much better done at home than in the arrivals hall.

At the airport: Walk out of arrivals. The Bolt pickup area is clearly signposted (separate from the taxi rank). Open the app, enter your destination, and confirm the booking. The app shows your driver’s name, photo, car model, and registration plate. Match these before getting in.

Price estimate: €5–8 to the Old Town as of 2026. The price shown in the app at booking is the price you pay — no surprises.

Bolt XL: For groups of 4–6 or for large bags, select Bolt XL (larger vehicle class). Slightly more expensive but far more comfortable than cramming into a standard car.

Night service: Bolt operates 24 hours. There are slight price surges on Friday and Saturday nights after midnight, but prices remain reasonable.

“Do I need local cash to pay for transport?”: No. Tram accepts contactless bank cards. Bolt is paid in-app. ATMs are available in the arrivals area if you want cash for other purposes.

“My flight lands at 2 am — is there transport?”: Yes. Bolt operates 24 hours. Tram 4 does not run late at night. For late-night or very early arrivals, Bolt is the solution.

“I have a lot of luggage — can I take the tram?”: Possible but uncomfortable at peak hours. For multiple large cases, Bolt is more practical.

“How do I find tram 4 at the airport?”: Exit the arrivals hall and look left. The tram stop is immediately outside, with a glass shelter and the track clearly visible.

“Is there a bus route as well?”: Buses 2 and 49 also serve the airport and connect to the city centre, but tram 4 is faster and more direct for most destinations. The bus is an alternative if tram 4 is not running or not convenient.

Tram 4 from Viru Centre: Take tram 4 heading towards the airport (direction: Lennujaam / Airport). Frequency and travel time are identical to the inbound journey (about 15 minutes).

Allow extra time at peak hours: Mornings between 7–9 am and afternoons between 4–6 pm can add 5–10 minutes to the tram journey due to traffic at road crossings. Allow 35–40 minutes from Old Town to being through airport security on busy days.

Bolt to the airport: Usually €5–8, faster than the tram during busy periods because it does not stop. Use the scheduled ride feature in the Bolt app to pre-book your pickup for early morning flights.

Airport check-in: Tallinn Airport is small and fast. For EU flights without checked bags, 45 minutes before departure is usually comfortable. With checked bags, 75–90 minutes is safer. The airport has free WiFi and a reasonable café airside.
